Teacher divided the class into groups. There are four tables in the classroom and two tables in front of the white board and the others are behind those two tables.

Description of the activity

1. What is the specific purpose of the activity?

Students can use online dictionary to find synonyms of Verb.  (https://www.thesaurus.com/)

Student can paint a more accurate picture by choosing a more precise verb.

Student can write a more interesting paragraph by using different VERB.

2. What materials and/or tools are needed for the activity?

Picture book Saint Patrick and three brave mice

3. What steps does the instructor need to follow to carry out this activity in class?

Warm up:

Divide the class into four groups, and give each group a short paragraph (worksheet 1)

Introduce the dictionary website:   (https://www.thesaurus.com/)

Students have to work together, to underline the verb, go to the website to find more synonyms, to rewrite the paragraph with those synonyms.

Presentation

Each group has to present their story twice with the original version and the rewrite version.

Teacher leads the class to discuss questions:

  1. What does the paragraph talk about?
  2. Is the two story the same?
  3. What the differences between two stories?
  4. Is choosing the verb important?

Teacher introduces “Verb for Precision and Connotation”

Practice:

Divide the class into four groups, and give each group Worksheet 2.

Students have to work together to make a sentence of each verb.  (5 minutes)

Times up, each group tear up the worksheet and put the sentences into a big box.

Activity: charade

Teacher shows all the words on the board, and invites one student pick one sentence from the box and act the word out.

When the other students get the answer, he or she calls out the word and try to make a sentence.

Production:

Take out the picture book “Saint Patrick and three brave mice”

Teacher invites students to read together.

Writing Activity:

Pair up the class and each pair have one page of the story book. They have to work together to rewrite the page. Each group will have 10 minutes.

Times up. Teacher invites each pair to read the story in sequence.
