我就喜歡這樣的妳

今天去聽了一場關於 食物性質的英語繪本演講，講者是來自於台北市蛋黃區的老師，BETTY 老師有豐富繪本教學的經驗，也帶領學生於課後社團閱讀更多精彩的繪本，並透過不同的活動抓住學生的心。感謝  BETTY 女神，讓我認識了許多色香味俱全的繪本，透過BETTY老師的眼睛，我看到更多細節，也開始構思不一樣的繪本課程。 BETTY 老師本人相當的客氣，對於現場老師的疑問也都耐心解答並樂於分享最近的新知，身為一個在現場實作的講師，BETTY 更能體諒現場老師時間的珍貴以及訊息的正確性。以下就老師當天的呈現，做分享:  HOW DO PICTURE BOOKS TELL STORIES ABOUT FOOD?

 You are What You Eat and Other Mealtime Hazards

演講開始前，老師用這本繪本中的幾個食物諺語，來考考我們知不知道意思 TOUGH COOKIE   / USE YOUR NOODLE   / AS COOL AS CUCUMBER 

水果其實對於大多數的學生來說算是熟悉的單字，如果老師能運用水果或是食物的諺語融入教學，相信學生都會滿感興趣的。

In this deliciously clever follow-up to Butterflies in My Stomach and Reach for the Stars, our young hero and his loyal dog, Roger, tackle another major aspect of life: eating. Mealtime should be a piece of cake, but this finicky eater eats like a bird. And that drives his mom bananas because he really should have three square meals a day. Serge Bloch (born 1956) is a cartoonist and illustrator. His work has appeared in major advertising campaigns and in publications including the New York Times, Time, and the Washington Post. His books for children include I Dare You Not to Yawn, You Are What You Eat, and Reach for the Stars.

如果不是對於繪本有興趣，或是自己本身有相關研究，真的不知道那麼多可以用的繪本，更汗顏的說其實下面的繪本，我只知道兩三本，其他都是老師介紹我才知道那麼美好，所以滿建議老師，找一個對於繪本有興趣的也有相當教學經驗的老師，引導，這樣會比瞎子摸象快很多唷；因為BETTY老師教學繪本的經驗豐富，分門別類地呈現給大家:

 可以實作的英語繪本

英語老師們不要被COMPETENCE 素養給迷惑了，其實設計素養導向的課程不難，但是要真正抓住繪本的精神以及正確傳達繪本想表達的深度與溫度，就要靠各位老師的領會能力了。近來老師們在設計跨領域課程的時候，會把英語的比重放在操作型的語言，有時往往會忽略到繪本真實想傳達意義。因此，在設計素養導向課程的時候，停 - 看- 聽，很重要；看到一個可以發展成素養導向活動繪本的時候，先停下靜心，再仔細看看繪本想傳達的內容，聽聽別的領域老師的意見，最後再發展成為課程，讓學生除了有帶著走的能力，同時也能透過繪本增加它的知識以及強化他的學習態度。莫忘初衷，同時也別忘了我們的教學目標。 

  A FINE DESSERT 

In 1710, a girl and her mother in Lyme, England, prepare a blackberry fool, picking wild blackberries and beating cream from their cow with a bundle of twigs. The same dessert is prepared by an enslaved girl and her mother in 1810 in Charleston, South Carolina; by a mother and daughter in 1910 in Boston; and finally by a boy and his father in present-day San Diego. Kids and parents alike will delight in discovering the differences in daily life over the course of four centuries. Includes a recipe for blackberry fool and notes from the author and illustrator about their research.

這本繪本圍繞著一個傳統的點心 FRUIT FOOL  其中 FOOL 源自於法文，是SMASH 的意思。繪本明顯的標出四個不同的年代( 1710 - 1810- 1910 - 2010 )  相同的是他們都在做著這個傳統的點心。這邊可以發展的活動是利用 表格 列出不同年代，發展出不同的方法，老師可以再利用 venn diagram 找到相同相似處。

要延伸學生的higher level thinking 或是 critical thinking  老師可以再利用圖文關係，請學生去繪本找找 How did you notice from the pictures? Are there any other issues that the author want to tell us? 像是可以討論1710 的女性歧視 / 1810 的 黑奴權力 / 1910 的女權解放 / 到2010 年的族群融合等等。

本人覺得這個很適合低年級的小朋友閱讀，首先它的圖畫真的太可愛了，其次作者是以小朋友的角度去寫這本書，內容滿貼合小朋友的心意。透過可愛的故事，告訴孩子東西要吃完的概念。

 ARE YOU AN ECHO ? 

這本書的原文是日文，但是由於詩詞意寫得太美好了，於是翻譯成為英文版。本書的作者是個才華洋溢卻英年早逝的日本人，雖然是翻譯版本，但是絲毫不減詩文風采。

Misuzu Kaneko was born in 1903 in Senzaki, Japan. She rose to fame as a celebrated author of children’s poems. After her death, her poems fell into obscurity for decades, until the 1970s when Setsuo Yazaki discovered and published her full body of work in Japanese. This is the first English-language biography and collection of her poetry to be distributed in English.

David Jacobson has a BA in East Asian Studies from Yale University and an MBA from NYU. In 1984-5 he attended the Inter-University Center for the Study of the Japanese Language (the ＂Stanford Center＂). From 1987-9 he received a Mombusho scholarship to study at Hitotsubashi University. His news articles and TV scripts have been published widely in print, online, and broadcast media in the US and Japan, appearing in the Associated Press, The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, The Japan Times, and on NHK and CNN. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

Sally Ito holds a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and an MA in English from the University of Alberta. She received a Mombusho scholarship to study at Waseda University, where she worked on literary translations of modern and contemporary Japanese poetry. She has taught writing at several universities and has reviewed children’s books for the Paper Tigers blog. She is the author of several volumes of poetry, including Alert to Glory, and her 1998 story collection Floating Shore won the Writers Guild of AB Book Award. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada.

Toshikado Hajiri is a graphic artist and illustrator in Tokushima, Japan. After graduating from Ritsumeikan University in international relations and working at a trading company, in 2009 he decided to pursue his love for painting full-time by becoming an illustrator. His work has appeared in school textbooks, advertisements, calendars, and in several children’s picture books. He was awarded 2nd prize in the 2006 International Illustration Competition sponsored by the Japan Illustrators’ Association. His illustrations for Are You an Echo? will be his first for international publication.

Michiko Tsuboi is a graduate of Doshisha Women’s College where she majored in English literature. She also attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she studied and read Canadian literature in English. She has worked professionally as a translator and English teacher in Shiga, Japan for many years.
