Before the semester starts, the chair of the Foreign Language Department will have a Pedgagogy Training meeting with all the teaching assistants and FLTAs. He talks about what does he want us to achieve in a language teaching class. He uses playing baseball games for am example. he doesn't want us to explain where is baseball from or the history of it instead he wants us to teach Students how to play baseball so that they can play on their own. Then, he talks about ACTFL in detail and offers us some typical advice to us.   

  What is ACTFL ?  (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) 

ACTFL is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.

Think about a question, " What is language proficiency? Is there any clear definition? what do you think about it?

urge your students to practice their listening and speaking skills: make Ss to answer with a sentence and ask for expansion. T can say, "Please DESCRIBE or TELL ME ABOUT ... "

Novice level students are just like parrot 

- can responce with key words, no sentence structure

- can understand questions 

 

Intermediate level students are just like  linguistic survivor

- can say a complete sentence with time places

- can ask and answer question within a familiar situation 

 

Advanced  level students are just like reportor 

- can summary the event or tell a story and illustrate it with a complete framwork 

 

Superior  level students are just like thinker 

- have critical thinking : to judge or to explain an unfamiliar situation.

when students walks in at the very first class, teacher should have a talk with him /her for checking her/his language proficiency. If a students can do a simple greeting but he / she is at novice middle, teacher should ask him / her to change classes. 

 Language teaching program in Georgia Southern university 

In the Foreign language department, there are some languages like Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, Latins, German and so onand  there are a few levels that you can choose. In addition, GSU follow the ACTFL Rating scale that students can acquire a language step by step. For example,  if you are in CHIN 1001 which means your language proficiency falls on novice middle or if you are in SPAN 1001 which means your language proficiency falls on novice high. Different language has different starts with ACTFL Rating scale . 
 
Beginning level that start with 10 and the first semester is 01 and the second semester is 02 and novice low to nivice middle is very fast because as long as students acquire 20 words, her/his level is novice middle. novice- high to imtermediate level that start with 30 and they are a  serious of courses that you have to spend some times to take courses of Chinese cultures, geography and so on. There are three classes per week of CHIN 1001 ~ CHIN 2001 and there are two classes per week of CHIN 3030 serious. 
 
Year one:  CHIN1001 (Novice middle)  CHIN 1002 (Novice high)  "It takes 13 week from novice middle to novice high. "
 
Year two:  CHIN 2001 (Intermediate low)   CHIN 2002 (Intermediate middle 
 
Year3 & 4  CHIN 3030
 
  tips for a proficiency-oriented classroom 
have a happy classroom (high stimulation)
use target language all the time (at least 90%) : T can write the sentence on the board to help Ss. 
emphasize the students' responsibility for their own learning
move from assume knowledge to observe knowledge 
have realistic expectations
resist temptation to push too far ( Kresen i+1 )
recycle / spiral 
understand the degrees of control concept
 
  Be a guide on the side - get ogg the stage and let your students shine 
Coach, don't play. 
reman conscious of the proficiency goal for exercise.
breifly model the activity
have Ss work in pair. (efficiency)
alternate pairs
after every activity, have Ss report / share
move Ss quickly from one activity to another. (keep the teaching pace)
use your language and aviod Ss' mother tongue in class
assign, require, expect Ss to practice at home.  LTT ( listen / transcribe  / translate ) 
make the quiz like an activity - exercise - walk into class and observe your students.
