 unit 3 Who's he?

  Whose mouse are you?

A lonely little mouse has to be resourceful to bring his family back together.

In a series of delightfully imaginary achievements, "nobody's mouse" transforms himself into the beloved hero of his mother, father, sister, and brand-new baby brother. In their very first collaboration, Robert Kraus and Jose Aruego give charm and validity to one of childhood's more difficult experiences. Tender and catchy, Robert Kraus's rhyming text, combined with Jose Aruego's large, vibrantly clever illustrations, makes for a storytime classic.

Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do

Who wears what to work? The clues in each lively verse can be spotted hanging from the clotheslines. A mail carrier's uniform, the artist's brushes, and the chef's apron all hang from the clothesline. Then turn the page to learn which professionals wear and use the special gear in the jobs they do. Clever illustrations show the workers helping one another, and in the end, everyone joins together for a celebration that is out of this world. A perfect choice for reading aloud and encouraging kids to join in the guessing and reveal.

 Children's day

 A carp for Kimiko

A wonderful look into Japanese tradition and culture through the eyes of a young girl, Kimiko. Every year on Children's Day in Japan a kite in the shape of a carp is flown for each boy in the family. Kimiko desperately wants an orange, black, and white calico carp kite of her own to fly, but her parents remind her that there is a holiday just for girls-Doll's Day. This does not stop Kimiko from dreaming about and wishing for her very own carp. The magical ending achieves the impossible-Kimiko gets what she longs for without breaking tradition. Katherine Roundtree's beautiful illustrations evoke the wonder and excitement of childhood, which will charm readers as they celebrate tradition and diversity.

 Piggy Book

"Mr. Piggott and his sons are a male chauvinist lot who, outside of yelling for their dinner, don't exercise themselves much around the house. When Mrs. Piggott finally tires of the endless chores that sandwich her workday, she leaves the menfolk on their own, with a note saying, 'You are pigs.' With the cooking and housework untended, they soon turn genuinely porcine, a transformation Browne foreshadows with pig faces on the wallpaper, vases, fireplace, phone. As in most of Browne's art, there is more than a touch of irony and visual humor here. Fun to read aloud."--Bulletin, Center for Children's Books.
