rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks a work of non-fiction into parts and then explains how the parts work together to create a certain effect—whether to persuade, entertain or inform. A rhetorical analysis should explore the rhetorician’s goals, the techniques (or tools) used, examples of those techniques, and the effectiveness of those techniques.

Rhetorical analysis of the commencement address by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi

In 2009, US economic was depressed, even the major companies might be bankrupted, the unemployment rate was the highest in a decade and there were bunch of graduates  who were going to take the responsibilities in the uncertain future.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi,  a Nigerian writer, was invited to gave Kalamazoo College a commencement speech in 2009.

She modestly convinced those graduates that do allow hope but also fear by using her well organized, empathic speaking style, her own experiences and reasonable logic to assure them of their privilege.

First of all, Chimamanda used her friend’s story to trigger the graduates to think what you want to value in the future. To have the right and knowledge of laws was one of the American privileges.  She took suing as an example. American were protected by law and they can operate the right of suing as an US citizen whereas there were still some countries whose justice system didn’t always protect people. “You think about creating a society, an organization, a company that values the things that you want to value rather than the things that you are supposed to value.” ,Chimamanda said. Therefore, the graduates had the responsibility to construct a world for future, a law for the next generations, the value they want to value.

Secondly,  Chimamanda used her own experience to encourage the graduates to think about how little you know. She took herself as an example. Even though she was a well-known writer who got countless awards of her works, she still stayed humble and tried to learn more about unknown world. “I went back to school because I woke up each morning realizing how little I knew and how much I wanted to know.” , Chimamanda said.  Of course, you can be very proud of graduating from Kalamazoo College where taught you to think independently, to build up global connection, and to learn self-confidence. To enjoyed high-standard education was one of the American privileges.  However, don’t be a smugness. Do leave some spaces for opinions and take others’ suggestions. Do confess there are still rooms for you to grow up and become stronger.

Thirdly, Chimamanda used her own experience to encourage the graduates to read more books. Kalamazoo College had small sized classes, but it had a wonderful library and every imaginable resource that offered students to use. To have a plenty of resources of any other fields was one of the American privileges. In addition, Chimamanda used Colum McCann’s words to remind the students that reading books can extend you view toward the world, embrace empathy, and keep your imagination. “Books are still the best ways to truly come close to understanding complexity in our very complex world.” Chimamanda said. Thus, please read a book for whom needs to earn a living, for whom needs to develop their imagination, for whom needs to establish equal humanity.

Fourthly, Chimamanda used her own experience to persuade the graduates that there is never a single story about anything. She took the dialogue between her and a young American boy for an example.  The young thought that every Nigerian men were like the abusive father character because he had read one book called “Purple Hibiscus”.  You can not judge people by their appearance and definitely you cannot evaluate others by a single story. “It would never have occurred to me to think that just because I had read a novel about a young American character, that he was somehow representative of all Americans.” Chimamanda said. To have the right to know more aspects of a story was one of the American privileges.

Finally, Chimamanda used her own experience to encourage the graduates to make room for hope and for fear.  Keep your faith as a hope and feel you fear and conquer it. To have the right to confess your weakness was one of the American privileges.

“I knew, because I had made this choice to write fiction, that after all the ice cream bingeing, after all the dark and deep depression, that I would get up and keep writing.” ,Chimamanda said.

To sum up, Chimamanda was well-organized for her commencement speech, she used a real story to  remind them the things they want to value in the future, she used her own experiences to encourage students to confess how little they knew, she also inspired the graduates to think in different ways by reading more stories and listening from different aspects, and she accepted her fear and get up in another day.
