STEM stands for SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGEERING, AND MATH. STEM is promoted by the US president OBAMA in 2008 and became a worldwild trend. For example, in Taiwan, we announced a new educational curriculum in 2019 we called it as 108 curriculum. the new curriculum gsufocus on STEM which wants schools designed cross-field courses and make different subject teachers to work together. For example, we do "Aquaponics" in Taiwan in science class, we teach some English words that related to Aquaponics in English Class, we read some articles that related to Aquaponics in Chinese Class, we do some mathematic practice that related to Aquaponics in math Class and we try to decorate the fish box in Art class and so on
Georgia Southern University is known for STEM education and it established an institute for interdisciplinary STEM Education in college of education in 2012.
Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education in GSU
The Institute of Interdisciplinary STEM Education (i2STEMe) as an outreach center for the College of Education (COE) at Georgia Southern University. i2STEMe establishes collaborative interdisciplinary programs committed to excellence in K-20 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focusing on rural, diverse, low socioeconomic status and under-represented populations.
i²STEMe want to expand and capatilize on Georgia Southern's excellent track record for graduating minority students in STEM areas. To this end, the i2STEMe will strive to create broadly inclusive partnerships across academia, business, education, and research centers in Southeast Georgia, support professional development, outreach, curricular development, innovative courses, and research in STEM education through grant funded projects, and establish interdisciplinary STEM education master's and Ph.D. programs. The Institute will address problems indigenous to the rural environments of the region, including issues of cultural diversity and cultural relevance within our diverse population, matters of equitable access to STEM for low SES students, and concerns about the relevance of STEM for rural students. Long-term goals of the Institute are to establish partnerships across Georgia, the southeastern region of the United States, nationally, and even internationally to address issues of STEM education in rural areas.
The mission statement of the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education is the following. The mission of the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education is to establish collaborative interdisciplinary programs committed to excellence in K-20 STEM teaching and learning. The i2STEMe will strive to create broadly inclusive partnerships across academia, business, education, and research centers in the coastal plains of Georgia, support professional development, outreach, curricular development, and research in STEM education through grant funded projects, and establish interdisciplinary STEM education master's and Ph.D. programs. The Institute will support STEM projects by providing expertise in the evaluation of projects and in addressing broader impact initiatives of STEM research grants.
