Exploring Racial Stereotypes in American Comedy: a case study of Superstore

An ethnic stereotype involves part of a system of beliefs about typical characteristics of members of a given ethnic group, their status, societal and cultural norms. Moreover, the racial stereotype spread out quickly through popular media like Hollywood films and Netflix drama. Take American comedy Superstore for an example, both African Americans and Asian people are commonly depicted in drama: the former as lazy and carefree characters from the lower socioeconomic strata, while the latter are often portrayed as intelligent and aggressive nerds. However, White people are always portrayed as effortlessly rising to leadership positions in the stories. According to Wyer and Radvansky, the media plays a significant role in shaping ethnic perceptions and interactions between different groups (Wyer & Radvansky, 1999). Although the media affected our mind unconsciously, there is some evidence that showed racial stereotypes particularly in White, Asian people, and African American in Superstore.
