The workshop was help by the Georgia Department of Education, Georgia Southern university, and Savannah-Chatham county public schools.

It is a collaborative workshop which means unconference.  An unconference is a spontaneous discussion-based gathering of educators in which there is no presider or leader; rather participants will actively engage with one another and share strategies for what works and what does not work when helping students acquire a second language. Participants will determine the day's topic during the online registration process.

Cinema and Learning Notes

Recorder: Tzu-Chun Lin

We have eleven fabulous teachers joined this discussion.

We all agree that using film is a great material that help students to link the real world. They can learn the accents, culture, body language, and history through film.

Nowadays, it is easy to watch a video clip or film through YouTube or Netflix. One of the teachers shared her lesson plan,

Introduction of the film, summary it, worksheet to introduce some new words, ask comprehension questions, then invite students to do prediction of the plot.

One of teachers shared her activity,

Divide the class into groups (four people are perfect), give them a topic, invite them to do the research, ask them to write a script, and make a short film on their own. She mentioned that activity itself must make students feel the excitement of the language

One of teachers asks everybody, "How do you think the subtitles?"

Teachers reply, it makes connection between words and reality. Also, you can use the function of reply which help you to know more. One teacher reminds us don't forget language is for speaking and communication so that it helps to improve your listening skills and learn new terms of the target language.

One of the teachers also asked about the challenges.

One teacher said, "You need to get permission from the administration of playing a film in the public school."

One teacher said, “You must be very careful with hot bottom like immigration. Besides, she mentioned that some scenes might be very common is one country but it's a Taboo in another country. As a teacher, we shall teach our kids to get more knowledge so that they will have a brand-new viewpoint towards the same thing.

Incorporating Culture Notes

Recorder: Tzu-Chun Lin

We have two Spanish professors and four high school teachers in the discussion.

Q: how do you incorporate culture into your class?

One teacher says, she will use authentic material like the real articles in the website. She finds a cultural text and designed it into a lesson. For example, she will teach new vocabulary and some sentences and then they have to do a research project that students have to find sources and write a thesis. She said, authentic material is a window that helped students to see the real world.

One teacher also mentioned that she used culture comparison in her class.  Students have to do a compare and contrast in different topics like housing, transportation, and electricity. More topic like, "How do people in your country react to foreigners and their community?"

To conclude, students can understand global components of culture which is more realistic.  (Project based culture exploration)

One teacher shared her lesson plan,

Read the text out loud, summary it, ask comprehension questions, and talk about the sentences and Grammars.

One of the teachers talked about authentic material she used in her classes, like the local music, clothing and even took the class to Mexico restaurant. Then, she talked about culture symbol. You must take students back to their culture and then triggered them to think about others.

One of the teachers also mentioned "value judgement" Different is not bad.

Culture is daily lives. Try to challenge your students with normal things in their lives.

"What is your party look like?" We can talk about punctuation, food, and so on.
