C. Delivery

1. Introduction

I would like to share a story of knot. Make a guess when is the first knot that show up in the history? The answer is 4000 years ago in the prehistory times. At that time, people used knots for different functions like fixing, connection and hanging.

While we are in the wild, knowing how to tie a knot is very important.

A good knot can save lives when you're dealing with a survival situation, performing first aid, and when working over heights or water

Today we are going to introduce five different knots for different functions. I hope after this seminar you can tell me at least two functions of knot and know how to tie a square knot or jar sling.

In the end, we will ask you some questions about the seminar.

2. Body –

Activity : world café

Four or five people in a group and divide the class into groups. ( 5 groups)

Invite one of representative from each group and sit in a circle with the presenter and other groups sit in semicircle facing the center.

The presenter demonstrates square knot and explains its function.

Then, the presenter invites the representative to give it a try.

Finally, the representative goes back to her / his group to teach the other.

When they are done, switch the representative to the middle circle to learn the bowline.

# the sequence of the knot:

Square knot –

  1. Function: The square knot is a classic for connecting lines and tying knots. Whether you are tying two ropes together to make a longer rope, or you are tying up a bundle of firewood to carry.
  2. Procedure: You can tie a solid square knot by lapping one rope right over left, then underneath the other, and then tying the same again in the reverse direction—left over right and then underneath.

The bowline –

  1. Function: save people from high position to low position or to drag objects on the ground.
  2. Procedure: Form a loop on top of the long end of the line. Pass the working end of the line up through the loop and around behind the line. Then pass the working end down through the original loop, all while maintaining the shape of the second loop you create, which becomes your bowline loop. Once the “rabbit” is back down its hole, pull the “tree” up to tighten the bowline.

Two half hitch –

  1. Function: The Two Half Hitch is the perfect knot for hanging a clothesline—or hammock—between two trees or posts.

Timber Hitch

  1.  Function: The timber hitch secures a rope to an object for hauling or to act as a support.
  2. Procedure: To create a timber hitch, all you need to do is run the free end of the rope around the object, like a log, that you intend to pull. Then wrap the tag end of the rope around the inside of the loop you created four or five times.
