在語言學習中，運用心智圖（mind mapping）有助於提升學生的記憶與理解，心智圖結合圖像與語文的雙重編碼、結構化知識組織以及降低認知負荷等優勢，能有效提升學生的詞彙學習效果與長期記憶能力。
Allan Paivio 提出的雙編碼理論（Dual Coding Theory）指出，人類在處理資訊時，會同時透過「語文系統」與「圖像系統」進行編碼；當學習內容同時以文字與圖像呈現時，能形成雙重記憶路徑，進而提升記憶效果（Paivio, 1986）。心智圖正是結合關鍵詞與圖像的工具，有助於加深學生對單字的記憶。此外，Tony Buzan 所提出的心智圖概念強調以放射狀結構組織資訊，透過關聯與分類促進理解與記憶，能有效協助學習者建立知識架構（Buzan, 1993）。這與語言學習中單字的語意網絡建構相符，有助於學生將零散詞彙轉化為有組織的知識系統。
從認知負荷理論來看，John Sweller 指出學習者的工作記憶容量有限，若資訊呈現方式能降低認知負荷，將有助於學習成效（Sweller, 1988）。心智圖透過分類與視覺化呈現，能減少學生在處理資訊時的負擔，使其更容易理解與記憶單字之間的關係。
