Novel <Puppet Flower> 

"Puppet Flower" is a long historical novel written by Taiwanese physician and novelist Chen Yaochang. The story is based on the Luo Mei incident in Taiwan's Hengchun Peninsula in 1867. It describes Tou-ke-tok, the leader of the Skaro chiefdom of the Paiwan people. (Chinese translation Zhuo Qidu) and the French-American consul in Xiamen Li Xiande signed the historical event of the South Point Alliance. The book combines official historical figures and fictional characters to describe the Taiwanese aboriginals, Hokkien people, Hakkas Western countries, etc. Conflict, coordination, and development among individual groups. The novel was published by Yin Ke Publishing House on January 5, 2016. In the same year, it won the Golden Book Award for Novel in the Book Category of the Taiwan Literature Award. Public television announced in 2017 that it would be adapted into a TV series "Seqalu: Formosa 1867".

History background 

The Rover Incident occurred in 1867 when Taiwan was under Qing Dynasty rule. This event led to diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Qing China, resulting in the Treaty of Tientsin, which affected Taiwan's international status and the treatment of its indigenous peoples.

Introduction of Seqalu: Formosa 1867

"Seqalu: Formosa 1867" is a Taiwanese historical drama based on Chen Yao-chang's novel "The Puppet Flower." The film recounts the events surrounding the Rover Incident of 1867, where an American merchant ship, the Rover, wrecked off the coast of southern Taiwan. It depicts the conflict and eventual reconciliation between American sailors and Taiwanese indigenous people, highlighting the multicultural dynamics of 19th-century Taiwan.

A British man, he came to Asia to work as a sailor when he was young. He also worked for Tianli Bank and assisted Li Xiande in the investigation after the Luo Mei incident.

His father is from southern Fujian and his mother is an aboriginal of the Pingpu ethnic group.
