Mulberry High School commencement speech - Brenda

  nice sentences

“No matter what stereotypes or statistics are placed on you, you can overcome them.”

“Persevering though your own struggles, and for turning your adversities into opportunities.”

  reflect questions

Alvarez-Lagunas writes about her motivations. What kept her going when things got hard? She asks the question of her audience, what motivates you? Give me your answer.

Alvarez-Lagunas’ motivation has been rooted in her migrant culture. Life is hard for those immigrants and the only way to get out of this lifestyle is through Education. Thus, no matter how hard it is, how struggle in your deep mind, how many times you yelled to yourself that let’s stop here, you will never gave up because you want to have the chance to change your life by studying hard and get in a nice university to a better new life.

As for me, when something is immediately in need, it will motivate me to learn. Take English Instruction in Taiwan for an example.  Due to the big change of our curriculum in Taiwan, all the English teachers have to learn something new to fit in the world trend. Thus, I spent over than a hundred hours per year, joining different workshops that talks about teaching methods, participating various international forums to know what are others countries doing for facing the new world and how to educate our kids to fit in the future.  In addition, I love recording and sharing news with others so that I have to pay fully attention while I was learning and digest it into my words, my thoughts and to share with others.

How does poem about onions reflect what Brenda Alvarez-Lagunas is telling her audience in her commencement speech?

The poem about onion reflect “LOVE” that Alvarez-Lagunas wanted to tell us in her commencement speech.

Love is the most powerful things in the world, which can defeat the darkest thought, support you go though the hardest task, insist on what you want to trace; meanwhile, love is flexible, which can gradually sneak into your heart and built the greatest wall to defense evil, continuously give you strength to keep following your dreams, magically enlarge to unlimited quantity or minify as small as particle. Yes, this is the power of love, just like the author mentioned in her speech, “Her hands, so swollen and barely able to more but she never complained and yet you able to fill more bucket then me.”
