WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT ? 

This course examines the history of American Art from the Colonial Period through the present. Works of art and other forms of material culture will be explored and discussed within the context of philosophical, historical, social, and cultural developments. Attention will be given to the writings of artists and critics, as well as texts by contemporary art historians, historians, and other scholars which illustrate the variety of methodologies and interpretations that are currently being brought to bear on American art, architecture, and material culture. The format for this course is lecture with discussion. Prerequisite(s): A minimum grade of "C" in ARTH 2532 or permission of instructor.  (CREDIT BY JULIE MCQUIRE)

Success in the course is contingent upon the student's attending classes, keeping up with reading assignments, writing a research paper, and preparing for examinations.  This is a 3-credit course, so students should plan on spending at least two hours of study for every one-hour in class. Summary: Desperate bands of settlers strive to carve out an identity in a virgin land ( America ) In the west, Spainish missions use art to convert the natives to Catholicism  ; In the east, plain protest settlers are suspicious of art's pleasures and in Virginia, an exited aristocracy recreates its ideal of England.
